I think it is true that it's harder to stay in touch when you can't picture any of the things the person is describing. It's true whether the move was abroad or not. Maybe it just is the natural order of life these days when people are so mobile and friends ECShttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03980638224399713624noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11802256.post-1139945588829526222006-02-14T20:33:00.000+01:002006-02-14T20:33:00.000+01:00I'm an American and lived in Berlin for more than ...I'm an American and lived in Berlin for more than a year some time ago. I can really relate to your post because I had the same problem with friends. I do think the time difference affects things. (For example, I'm now on the east coast (US) and my brother is in California. Even just 3 hours can be huge--when I'm in the mood/have the time to talk, he's still working, having dinner, etc.) It's Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11802256.post-1139934715258796332006-02-14T17:31:00.000+01:002006-02-14T17:31:00.000+01:00I've been thinking a lot about the perceived dista...I've been thinking a lot about the perceived distance of being "overseas". I have seen a lot of friends fall away in the last year and a half, and it makes me very sad, because I don't feel that far away from them. I guess the person doing the leaving is the one who still feels close, and the left-behind feel just that, but damn it, it can be frustrating!

It's not like we've moved to a JBhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12108948350959912207noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11802256.post-1139913048401922062006-02-14T11:30:00.000+01:002006-02-14T11:30:00.000+01:00Hi Sirrý! It's also been difficult because so many of my friends are students or teachers, and can't afford to come visit here. It's hard to explain to some people in the States just how expensive things really are here, that $200 is not enough for a week's worth of food, gas, and entertainment. However, as ECShttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03980638224399713624noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-11802256.post-1139883946222095982006-02-14T03:25:00.000+01:002006-02-14T03:25:00.000+01:00It is interesting all the new germs and how one co...It is interesting all the new germs and how one country is considered to be more or less primitive than another. When it is all relative to the environment and sadly ignorance.

On another note, as I've been hopping around the world the past 15+ years I too went through the loss of most of my friends, always hoping I'd make new ones. But then there are the cultural differences, that also Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
